Chapter2

Set a personal example with visible, memorable symbols and behaviors.

The keys are "Right words" and "Tone" at the first section, "Give the Right Speech".
Shackleton had known how to give a speech to cheer the crews who were in a disappointing mood.

He said that I had no doubt that, provided they continue to work their utmost and to trust me, we will all reach safety in the end. (p31 l13-l15)
What he said to them was simple, but he chose the right tone, calm, confident, and reassuring.

I sometimes become nervous to talk in front of many people.
Therefore, I would like to lean the speech skill from him.

Furthermore, I thought that "Sacrifice" is important to inspire success in the section of "Use Vivid Symbols" and "Be Vivid Symbols".

We must jettison anything that will not directly enable us to accomplish our goal. (p34 l31-32)
This sentence made the biggest impression for me.
At the edge, we have to focus on the real desire, which will be the goal to success.
We should forget about any other greed.

In the case of Shackleton, he threw away his gold watch, gold cigarette case, and several golden sovereigns before anyone else.

"Self-sacrifice" (p36 l28) is really difficult for all.
By doing so, however, everyone will understand that you are a leader.

  1. Hi Rikako,

Your blog sums up each chapter and you emphasizes some words or sentences which have a strong impression on you. So I can also read your feeling from your blog. Great!

As you say, 'Self-sacrifice' is sometimes required to the leaders. However, in my opinion, leader is also one of the team member. So the leader can also be for him/herself, as he/she should be for other members.
I do not have any doubt that the leaders should be for the team... but he/she should also pay attention to him/her self...
Well, what do you think? :)

  2. Thank you for your comment!

    Yeah, I agree with you.
I overaccentuated the importance of self-sacrifice.

Of course, the leader should be for the team.
However, he also has to value himself.
